On Sunday, April 24, the National Museum of Language will have a booth at the 31st annual Rockville Science Day in Rocksville, Maryland!
Linguistics is a science with a systematic approach, like other sciences, using study, observation, and experimentation. At our booth, we will give visitors a chance to observe a variety of authentic examples of world languages in order to develop their own theories about the nature and principles of language. These will include multimedia presentations of children’s stories in 16 languages, poetry from 12 countries in 8 languages, and silly jokes in ancient Greek. We will also show the Alphabet Tree, which traces the development of alphabets from hieroglyphics to the present. Visitors will have a chance to write words in Chinese, Japanese, or Persian with disappearing ink on magic paper, make their names in hieroglyphics, and learn about Native American languages.
