World Endangered Writing Day

The NML Polish Liaison, Olgierd Uziemblo of Warsaw University, introduced the plans for the first-ever World Endangered Writing Day on January 23, 2024, at the most recent meeting of the NML Language Leadership Council on September 18, 2023. The concept for this event was developed by the Endangered Alphabets Project, which has been working since 2012 to preserve and revitalize endangered cultures through promoting their indigenous writing systems.  At present, 85% of the world’s languages are endangered.  The World Endangered Writing Day is planned as an international event that will showcase efforts by museums and other groups from around the world to present their research on endangered writing systems.  NML is participating in this special event.  More details about our own sponsored presentations will be forthcoming soon.
