Karl Schmidt sits in the inn/ tavern. The waiter brings him soup. Karl is silent for a short time. Then he says to the waiter: “I can’t eat this soup.” But the soup is very good, Mr. Schmidt!” the waiter says. Yet Karl says only: “I can’t eat this soup.”
The waiter calls the cook. The cook comes. Karl says: “I can’t eat this soup.” The cook cries out, “But, Mr. Schmidt, I cooked this soup myself. It’s very good.” Karl merely says: “I can’t eat this soup.”
The cook shakes his head and calls the innkeeper. The innkeeper comes. He asks: “What is the matter?” Karl says: “I can’t eat this soup.” The innkeeper asks: “Why not?” Karl says: “I don’t have a spoon.”
Karl Schmidt sitzt im Gasthaus. Der Kellner bringt ihm eine Suppe. Karl schweight eine Weile. Dann sagt er zu dem Kellner: “Ich kann diese Suppe nicht essen.” “Aber die Suppe ist sehr gut, Herr Schmidt!” sagt der Kellner. Doch Karl sagt nur: “Ich kann diese Suppe nicht essen.”
Der Kellner ruft den Koch. Der Koch kommt. Karl sagt: “Ich kann diese Suppe nicht essen.” Der Koch ruft: “Aber, Herr Schmidt, ich habe diese Suppe gekocht. Sie ist sehr gut.” Karl sagt nur: “Ich kann diese Suppe nicht essen.”
Der Koch schüttelt den Kopf und ruft den Wirt. Der Wirt kommt. Er fragt: “Was ist los?” Karl sagt: “Ich kann diese Suppe nicht essen.” Der Wirt fragt: “Warum nicht?” Karl sagt: “Ich habe keinen Löffel.”
